How to Play Build-A-Bucket
Open the NBA player builder, spin a team and player, take one attribute, and repeat until your 10-slot basketball build is complete.
What is Build-A-Bucket?
Build-A-Bucket is a free browser basketball player builder hosted by Build-A-Player. You assemble one player from other players' attributes: spin, choose one available trait, then repeat. It is different from choosing a five-player NBA lineup. This independent guide explains the game and gives you a local board for recording your picks.
A real first pick: what changes on screen?
In our September 10 Guard Classic run, the wheel returned Norman Powell. We selected his Jump Shot graded B. The board then showed Norman Powell in Jump Shot, 9 slots remaining, and a live OVR of 81. The next pick, Ayo Dosunmu's B- Finishing, left 8 slots and a live OVR of 79. These are observations from one run, not a predicted outcome for your next spin.

Open build-a-player.com/bucket in your browser. No download is needed for the observed browser game. Our Play page also offers an optional official-site frame.
Choose Guard or Big
Choose Guard for PG, SG or SF, or Big for PF or C. Both observed boards have 10 slots. Guard includes Passing, Handles and Perimeter Defense; Big uses Rebounding, Playmaking and Interior Defense instead.
Confirm the game mode
Choose Classic (Current NBA) or All-Time (NBA Legends) on the start screen. Salary Cap is labeled Build on a budget. Sandbox is a switch inside the draft board, not a separate start-screen card.
Spin and select one attribute
Press SPIN to reveal a team and player. Read the available attribute grades, then click an attribute chip to fill its matching slot. In our desktop test, clicking Jump Shot filled that slot and reduced the counter from 10 to 9. Only the selected attribute goes into your build.
Repeat until all 10 slots are filled
Spin again and choose from the remaining attributes. A filled slot disappears from the available choices. Record the player and grade after each pick; use Skills, Physical and Mental to navigate the board. Keep the final displayed OVR with your record.
Review the completed run
Use the analyzer to find missing fields and the lowest visible grade without treating those observations as the official rating formula.

Guard vs Big: choose a role before the first pick
Guard covers PG, SG and SF; Big covers PF and C. Both boards have 10 slots. Big replaces Guard's Passing, Handles and Perimeter Defense group with Rebounding, Playmaking and Interior Defense. The tracker now provides both observed boards.
Compare Guard vs BigClassic vs All-Time: do not mix unlike runs
The start screen labels Classic as Current NBA and All-Time as NBA Legends. The same role had the same 10 labels in both inspected modes. Their player pools differ: the All-Time board displayed names such as Dominique Wilkins, while Classic displayed current-player groups. Equal slot counts do not establish equal scoring rules.

Count the labels on the active board. Our September 10 run required 10 selections, including separate Basketball IQ and Leadership/Clutch slots. Even the official completed screen showed a short message saying “All 9 slots filled” while its result board listed all 10. Use the actual board and remaining-slot counter when wording conflicts.

Should I start with Guard or Big?
Choose Guard for perimeter-player attributes or Big for rebounding, playmaking and interior defense. We checked both 10-slot boards on September 10, 2026; neither role is guaranteed to produce a higher OVR.
Does the tracker know the official OVR formula?
No. It stores the inputs and results you enter. Hidden weights, probability rules, and the official OVR formula remain unknown.
